Sunday, April 18

Sunday with our new plans set, we left Reims around 10:30AM after a quick run to Carrfore (supermarket) and filling up the water tanks. We would do 7 locks to the Billy tunnel, and then 8 additional locks to Conde sur Marne.

Arrived at our quayside mooring at Conde sur Marne, did a short walk to the village but found nothing open (afterall it is Sunday!). Had our first ½ bottle of Forget-Chaurvet & Fils Premier Cru Brut Selection! Lovely on a hot afternoon.

Champagne Houses we visited while in Reims

Just a quick step back to Ken and my visit to Champagne Valley prior to Leneke and Hanneke’s visit.

Pommery Champagne House was our first experience of Champagne tasting and knowledge. Huge bucket of information and Ken and I left with wide smiles on our faces filled with new “wine” knowledge. Thursday and Friday before returning to Reims and the boat, we visited (Ken and I), Forget-chauvet where we purchased One Blanc de Blancs, One blend, and 6 1/2 bottles of the blend. In the Marne-Champagne Valley, we stopped at Wilmart & Cie (Rilly la Montague), Marc Hebrart in Mareull suy Ay, and Dieter Herbert in Rilly la Montague. The boat sits a bit lower in the water with our new purchases.

Reim’s continued

We expect to see Leneke and Hanneka sometime early Saturday. They arrived around 1pm and we decided to take a walk to Reims Center City for light lunch. Ken checked out the train station on our way to lunch.

Later in the afternoon, we took Hanneke’s car and drove back to Champagne country (about a 30-40 minute drive depending where you go) to eat dinner at Le Mesnil, our new friend Armelles restaurant. We had some time to kill before our reservation so we wandered around one of the small villages there. Leneke remarked that we never see any people. Most towns do look very much like “ghost towns”, but of course we are usually wandering in the mid-afternoon when everything is closed and most are taking their mid-day “naps”. We had a wonderful meal at Le Mesnil, got a bit lost going back to Reims, but arrived at boat where we were dropped off and said our goodbyes to Leneke and Hanneka.

We have found, as did the entire world, that an Ash cloud can change your life, schedule and possibly miss with travel plans. Ken’s original plan was to fly back to the USA on Sunday, but due to the Ash cloud, he delayed it one week. This meant we could not stay in Reims, but have to continue our progress down the canals.
